SUMMARY:a.pe.ri.od.ic (37)
DESCRIPTION:Join a•pe•ri•od•ic for an evening of music centered around the piano at Narloch Piano Studio with works by experimental music master Pauline Oliveros\, the Canada-based Linda Catlin Smith\, the British Jane Dickson\, and a•pe•ri•od•ic’s own Nomi Epstein’s world premiere of a trio for ensemble members Jeff Kimmel and Eliza Bangert. The evening will feature smaller chamber works\, as well as solos\, and a group improvisation. The ensemble will be joined by guest pianist Christopher Narloch. \nPauline Oliveros: Breaking Boundaries (1996) for piano solo or ensemble\nLinda Catlin Smith: Selections from Nocturnes and Chorales (2013) for piano solo\nJane Dickson: Traces for piano and electronics (2014)\nNomi Epstein: sounds for Jeff (2018) for flute\, bass clarinet\, piano \nhttps://www.aperiodicchicago.com/ \nhttp://paulineoliveros.us/\nhttp://www.catlinsmith.com/\nhttp://janedickson.net/\nhttp://nomiepstein.com/ \nJane Dickson is a Glasgow based composer and pianist. Her background includes classical piano and conducting\, live electronics performance and composition and free improvisation using extended techniques. Her interest in live electronics lies in the subtle augmentation of acoustic instruments and voice\, playing with subverting and dislocating expectation and perception. She has completed commissions from members of the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Radio 4 and performed and had her work performed across Europe including national radio and television broadcasts in Austria\, Spain and the UK. Her recent collaborative releases include Wandelweiser und so weiter (another timbre) and Accidents of Matter or of Space (SUPPEDANEUM). Her current research explores virtuosity and gender in contemporary performance and alternative methods of notation\, and heavily informs her creative practice. She is a member of international group n s m b l and has premiered two works by Jakob Ullmann: son imaginaire III (HCMF ʻ13) and solo V (Courtisane ʼ15). Recent awards include PRS Women Make Music (for How to Make Two Outfits Out of One\, Battersea Arts Centre) and Creative Scotland Artists Bursary for Composition\, both for the creation of new and experimental opera. \nLinda Catlin Smith grew up in New York and lives in Toronto. She studied music in NY\, and at the University of Victoria (Canada). Her music has been performed and/or recorded by: BBC Scottish Orchestra\, Exaudi\, Tafelmusik\, Other Minds Festival\, California Ear Unit\, Kitchener-Waterloo\, Victoria and Vancouver Symphonies\, Arraymusic\, Tapestry New Opera\, Gryphon Trio\, Via Salzburg\, Evergreen Club Gamelan\, Turning Point Ensemble\, Vancouver New Music\, and the Del Sol\, Penderecki\, and Bozzini quartets\, among many others; she has been performed by many notable soloists\, including Eve Egoyan\, Elinor Frey\, Philip Thomas\, Colin Tilney\, Vivienne Spiteri\, and Jamie Parker. Â She has been supported in her work by the Canada Council\, Ontario Arts Council\, Chalmers Foundation\, K.M. Hunter Award\, Banff Centre\, SOCAN Foundation and Toronto Arts Council; in 2005 her work Garland (for Tafelmusik) was awarded Canada’s prestigious Jules Léger Prize. In addition to her work as an independent composer\, she was Artistic Director of the Toronto ensemble Arraymusic from 1988 to 1993\, and she was a member of the ground-breaking multidisciplinary performance collective\, URGE\, from 1992-2006. Linda teaches composition privately and at Wilfrid Laurier University\, Waterloo\, Canada. \nFounded in 2010\, a•pe•ri•od•ic‘s repertoire explores the indeterminacy of various musical elements including instrumentation\, structure\, pitch\, and/or duration. Drawn to works of sparseness\, contemplation\, and quietude\, this “daring group” (Chicago Reader) has a history of interpreting distinctive pieces using a collaborative rehearsal process\, deriving meaning and intention from oblique prose scores with great sensitivity. \nLed by Nomi Epstein\, the ensemble has commissioned\, premiered\, and recorded works by composers such as Michael Pisaro\, Eva-Maria Houben\, Jürg Frey\, James Saunders\, and Pauline Oliveros. a•pe•ri•od•ic released its debut album\, more or less\, featuring the music of Jürg Frey in 2014 under New Focus Recordings. The ensemble has received funding from the Swiss Arts Council\, the Earle Brown Foundation\, the Goethe Institute\, and the Foundation of Contemporary Arts. Members of a•pe•ri•od•ic hold graduate degrees in music performance or composition from Chicago-area universities and conservatories\, and are featured in other Chicago-based groups including Ensemble Dal Niente\, Outer Voices\, and Mucca Pazza.

SUMMARY:Andrew Barnes Jamieson
DESCRIPTION:Pianist\, composer and arranger Andrew Barnes Jamieson will perform solo pieces for the piano that are completely improvised\, drawing on his experience as a deeply creative performer with a multifaceted stylistic background. He will also be joined at times by composer and french horn player Megan Grace Beugger\, and composer Ben Zucker\, with his own improvised composition. \n$10 suggested donation \n————————— \nWith a passion for gospel music\, Andrew plays for City of Refuge\, UCC in Oakland\, California. With a passion for free improvisation and experimentation\, he created the polytonal “Ives Band\,” and the jazz/gospel-oriented “Trouble Ensemble.” He strives to integrate these musical streams through improvisation and creative composition. His 2014 chamber opera Heaven Down Here explores the profound hope and profound danger of both experimentation and faith traditions through the story of Jim Jones’ People Temple. His 2015 solo album Heard the Voice is a “dialogue” between experimental sounds and melodies of spirituals.\nAndrewbarnesjamieson.com \nIn his solo piano set\, he will spontaneously innovative harmonies and surprising compositional forms that incorporate a wide variety of traditions. As he weaves these sounds together into an original musical narrative\, he will bring them into dialogue and deconstruct them until they are heard and understood in radically new ways. \nSamples:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A27_z3Fudxo\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMi003_OOAM\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrW0uiLbbv8 \n——————————————————- \nMegan Grace Beugger is a composer particularly interested in creating direct relationships between the physicality of performance and sound production\, timbre\, and durational elements. In addition to music\, Megan has a strong interest and background in visual arts\, which has been a huge influence on her work. Her Music can be read about in the publication Noise in and as Music by Aaron Einbond and Aaron Cassidy\, which published a conversation regarding the performance of her work Daring Doris at the Qubit Noise Non-ference\, and in Jennie Gottschalk’s Experimental Music Since 1970\, which describes my work Liaison\, among other publications. Current projects include a solo electric guitar piece for Dal Niente’s Jesse Langen\, a theatrical piano piece for composer/performer Anthony Green\, and a recording project of her single breathe flute piece “Asthmatic Inhalation and Exhalation\,” for Kathryn Williams. For more information visit www.megangracebeugger.com \nMegan completed her bachelors in composition from Northwestern (2006)\, followed by her PhD from University at Buffalo (2015)\, where she studied with David Felder and was a Presidential Fellow. \n——————————————————- \nInterested in the possibilities of musical relationality amongst people\, objects\, and histories\, Ben Zucker crosses and intentionally plays with genre\, discipline\, and creative roles. As a composer\, sound artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and performer\, he has contributed to the experimental music scenes throughout the US and Europe\, performing and presenting work in places including the Banff Centre\, Vortex Jazz Club\, Center For New Music\, Trinity College Dublin\, Chapel Of The Chimes\, Southbank Centre\, New York Fringe Festival\, Switchboard Music Festival\, Experimental Sound Studio\, and the Darmstadt Ferienkurse. He has been called a “master of improvisation” (IMPOSE Magazine)\, was recognized as a “New Composer Talent” by the International Audio Branding Academy\, and his solo albums have been acclaimed as “a testament to the power of restraint and arrangement” (Decoder Magazine)\, and “more than a little bit remarkable” (Free Jazz Blog). Ben currently lives in Chicago\, as a doctoral student at Northwestern University.” www.benzuckersounds.com

SUMMARY:Vivian Yanzhe Yu
DESCRIPTION:Vivian Yanzhe Yu is a pianist and composer based in Chicago. Vivian is trained in the classical music tradition with a fondness for electronics and ambient soundscapes. Her approach towards music is the free-flowing and seamlessly blending both the electronics and acoustic together. Vivian is also a member of the Power Ambient Duo Magick Potion. \n  \nVivian’s piano works are lyrical narratives that exercise in structure\, emotional exploration and storytelling. In her electronic work\, Vivian shapes sound through hardware\, frequency modulation\, weaving melodic phrasing with dark\, edgy synth and noise to build an sonically immersive environment where the listeners could freely go wherever their imagination takes them.\nIn this evenings program\, Vivian will share her piano compositions from the album ‘The Unquiet Heart’.  And also share some of her not yet released works. Then she will transition into the sphere of dark electronic music to take you to another place. So please come comfortable and join her in an intimate evening of musical exploration at Narloch Piano Studio.
