He has received degrees from Northwestern University\, Queensland Conservatorium\, and the University of Kansas\, and was awarded a research fellowship to Institute Fabrica. Currently\, Hills is an active performer\, composer\, and recording artist in Los Angeles\, as well as a member of the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet. \nAn advocate of new music\, Hills has individually commissioned and premiered over 85 new works for percussion. He has given solo and chamber recitals across Europe\, Australia\, The United States\, Mexico\, and China. These include a featured performance for the International Society of Improvised Music\, the Days of New Music Festival in Chisinau\, Moldova\, the Queensland Music Festival\, the Ravello Concert Festival\, the Venice Art Biennale\, four PASIC conventions\, the Morelia Percussion Festival\, and Festival Mozaic. An advocate for percussion as an artistic discipline\, Hills has been the artist-in-residence at Rocky Mountain National Park\, Conservatorio de Las Rosas\, and a fellow at the OMI international artist’s colony. \nPercussive Storytelling\, a program that brings classical music and storytelling to kids in fun and accessible ways\, was launched by Hills while a fellow at Institute Fabrica. The program recently marked its 430th performance\, and has reached more than 80\,000 children in eight countries. For this work\, Hills has been the recipient of numerous arts grants\, and was named the 2009 Emerging Artist through the Kansas Arts Commission. The Lost Bicycle\, Hills’ debut solo CD of percussive stories\, has received four national parenting and creative arts awards (NAPPA Parent’s Awards Gold\, Parent’s Choice Silver\, World Storytelling Honors Award\, and a Creative Child preferred choice). In June 2015\, The Lost Bicycle was released as a fully illustrated children’s book published by AcutebyDesign. These sounds are tailor-made for the shaggy beast of burden of the Himalayan Plateau\, evoking their life and spirit in a mesmerising structured improvisation cycle. \nYuri Popowycz is a Detroit-based violinist\, electronic music producer/performer\, and illustrator. He performs with the Michigan Opera Theatre and is assistant concertmaster with the Michigan Philharmonic. He also plays out frequently in the city and is active with Detroit Bureau of Sound. Yuri is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy ‘11\, and the Oberlin Conservatory ‘15\, and has toured in Japan as concertmaster of the PMF orchestra as well as performed in Europe alongside the Jack quartet with the Lucerne Festival Academy. Currently he runs the ambient music label Music To Stretch To and enjoys working with all the wonderful artists living nearby. \nZac Brunell is a performer and concert producer in the Motor City. As director of the Detroit Bureau of Sound\, his work engulfs a range of avant garde music through his productions\, which have been described as “sounding as raw as mating bull elephants” (Lansing City Pulse on “X is for Xenakis”). Ms. Conde has performed in Master Classes by Nelson Delle – Vigne Fabbri\, James Giles\, Enrico Elisi\, Mutsumi Moteki\, Francois Germain\, the Escher String Quartet\, and more. Currently a sought after collaborative pianist\, and in pursuit of furthering her performing career\, she also teaches privately and strives to develop genuine love for music in the younger generation. Ms. Conde currently resides in Chicago\, Illinois.

His music is mostly performed by a dedicated community of friends and musicians (amongst others Philip Thomas\, Anton Lukoszevieze\, Julia Eckhardt\, James Saunders)\, but he has also written for the London Sinfonietta\, the Basle Sinfonietta\, Plus Minus and others. He has organised many public concerts to promote the presence\, wealth and variety of present day music exploration\, one thread of which is the concert series\, Music We’d Like to Hear\, co-curated with John Lely and Markus Trunk annually in London since 2005. As a soloist he has performed with Object Collection\, Skögen\, Apartment House\, Set Ensemble\, Incidental Music\, Q-02\, J.G. Thirlwell\, Phill Niblock\, Matteo Fargion\, Lee Patterson\, Angharad Davies\, Rhodri Davies\, Jürg Frey\, Michael Pisaro\, Michael Parsons\, Gavin Bryars\, Joshua Rifkin\, Tom Johnson\, and Christian Wolff\, amongst others. \nHis music has been labelled as experimental\, “reconstructing music from the ground up”\, and “sounding like nothing else”\, the work invariably returning to fundamental questions around the meaning of sound. SUMMARY:Mortar/ Noise Bias
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of direct and concrete action following the November election\, Noise Bias and Mortar are collaborating to raise money in support of Planned Parenthood\, which will continue to be under intense political scrutiny in the coming months. \n“Mortar” merges musicians from widely varying musical backgrounds into an ensemble that fuses seemingly incongruous music traditions. “Mortar” subverts expectations of chamber brass playing by frequently utilizing a very reserved\, personal brass sound in conjunction with low strings and electric guitar. The result is a combination of composed and improvised elements that strives to be both deeply intriguing and entirely approachable.  Chris Shuttleworth\, Trombone and compositions; Ben Phillips \, Trumpet and Flugelhorn; Zac Nunnery\, Electric Guitar; Aaron Brancato\, Cello; Eli Broxham\, Acoustic Bass \nNoise Bias is a new music ensemble consisting exclusively of female-identified musicians and artists who collaborate to perform works by female-identified composers. The women of Noise Bias share a common goal of creating and sustaining an environment where women are in positions of creative power and musical decision-making.

Allegro ma non troppo \nFantasy Trio for Clarinet\, Violoncello\, and Piano – Robert Muczynski (1929-2010) \nOblivion – Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) \nBiographies:\nSeasoned Trio was formed in July 2016 with the love of music (and food) by three classical musicians\, Taiwanese Pianist Li-Ying Chang\, Hong Kong Clarinetist Yuen-Yee Richardson\, and local Cellist Desiree Miller. They aim to share their passion in music with all kinds of audience while improving their musical and artistic levels through public performances as well as receiving coaching lessons from the finest musicians. \nLi-Ying Chang (Piano)\nTaiwanese pianist Li-Ying Chang graduated with a Master’s of Music in Piano Performance from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University\, under the tutelage of Pianist Benjamin Pasternack. As a musician\, Li-Ying seeks to share the transcendent experience of music with others as a solo and collaborating artist. In 2015\, Li-Ying graduated with the Artist Performance Diploma at The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University\, in the studio of Taiwanese Pianist Meng-Chieh Liu and Dr.Winston Choi. Li-Ying is a previous winner of the CCPA Showcase at Roosevelt\, and played the opening concert at Pianofest 2013. Li-Ying was chosen to collaborate with the CCPA Wind Ensemble for an annual performance at Ganz Hall\, in 2013. Ms. Chang played the piano with CCPA’s Chamber Orchestra as they recorded Thunderwalker\, composed by Composer Stacy Garrop\, for Cedille Records. Chang actively performs as a solo pianist\, Collaborative pianist and chamber musician in the Chicagoland area. \nYuen Yee Richardson (Clarinet)\nYuen Yee Richardson is an active music teacher and performer currently located in Chicago. Originally born and raised in Hong Kong\, Yuen Yee studied Clarinet and Piano at Hong Kong Baptist University with John Schertle and Genevieve Wong. In 2010\, Yuen Yee moved to Chicago and earned a Master’s degree in Music Performance from Roosevelt University\, where she studied Clarinet performance with Carol Lee Smith. After graduating in 2012\, Yuen Yee performed with various music ensembles including Chamber Opera Chicago\, Chicago Clarinet Ensemble\, and Chicago Concert Winds. Currently\, Yuen Yee is primarily performing with a classical chamber group the Seasoned Trio and an original music duo Adjacent Cruise. Besides performing\, Yuen Yee is also passionate in music education where she is teaching clarinet and piano at her own music studio and at ACM School of Music. \nDesiree Miller (Cello)\nDesiree Miller has performed in music halls all over the world as a chamber musician\, concert soloist and recitalist. She has performed in various music festivals and outreach programs throughout the United States\, Canada\, and Europe\, as well as in Haiti and South Korea. An avid devotee to the progress of new music\, Desiree has world premiered and recorded numerous chamber and solo works. In the same vein\, Desiree composes cello solo works to accompany theatrical plays and dance performances. Many of her works have been performed in New York\, Washington DC\, Chicago and even as far as Jerusalem!\nDesiree holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee\, where she studied under Dr. Stefan Kartman from 2002 – 2006. She then went on to earn two Master degrees in Cello Performance and String Pedagogy at Ohio University under Dr. Michael Carrera from 2006 – 2009. Wanting more performance experience\, Desiree attended the University of Cincinnati – College Conservatory\, where she earned an Artist Diploma with Professor Lee Fiser from 2009 – 2011. With nearly a decade spent in the university setting\, Desiree moved to the Windy City in the fall of 2011 to perform with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. As a member of this illustrious orchestra\, Desiree enjoyed the privilege of performing on the same stage as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, as well as receiving mentorship from both members of the Chicago Symphony and guest conductors.\nOverall\, Desiree’s focus is on the promotion of new music and the collaborative process between composer and performer. She believes that it is just as important to perform and learn from the great music of the past as well as to explore and create with musicians and artists of the present. Desiree is honored to be a member of the Seasoned Trio with stellar musicians Li-Ying Chang and Yuen Yee Richardson.

The concert centers around two new works by Scott Wollschleger and Sky Macklay commissioned by the Fusik/Larson duo for the 2016-2017 concert season. Also featured on the program are George Aperghis’s ‘P.S.’ for solo saxophone and Eric Wubbels’s phenomenal memoriam to David Foster Wallace\, ‘This is This is This is.’ \nBiographies:\nDr. James Fusik currently serves as Assistant Professor of Woodwinds at Minot State University (ND)\, and has previously taught at Wayne State University in Detroit\, MI. He has degrees from Bowling Green State University (M.M.\, DMA)\, and Central Michigan University (B.M. Theory/ Composition\, B.M.E. Music Ed)\, with studies under John Sampen\,\nJohn Nichol\, and Marilyn Shrude. A frequent clinician and recitalist\, Fusik has performed at conservatories and universities throughout the Midwest as well as various new music series events in Chicago\, New York\, and Omaha. Internationally he has performed in Germany\, Poland\, Canada\, Belgium\, and recently as a participant in the 2016 Darmstadt New Music Courses. He has premiered over 100 new compositions from composers including Karlheinz Stockhausen\, John Luther Adams\, Christopher Cerrone\, Ravi Kittappa\, and Nathan Davis. He is a frequent presenter and active contributor to the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA). Fusik is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist\, exclusively performing on Selmer Paris Saxophones and mouthpieces. \nBrooklyn based pianist Karl Larson is a specialist in the music of our time\, consistently presenting adventurous programs. Karl has premiered many solo piano and chamber pieces\, including works by David Rakowski\, Ken Thomson\, Robert Honstein\, Chris Cerrone\, and David Lang. Recent performances of note include Morton Feldman’s Triadic Memories\, Olivier Messiaen’s Harawi\, and the world premiere of Scott Wollschleger’s Meditations on Dust for solo piano and string orchestra. \nA sought after collaborator\, Larson has worked with many notable musicians and ensembles including Tristan Perich\, Ashley Bathgate\, Vicky Chow\, Erik Carlson\, Mantra\, Ensemble Signal\, the Eco Ensemble\, the Sleeping Giant Composer Collective\, and Contemporaneous. He has been featured on many notable series and festivals including the Bang on a Can Marathon\, the MATA Festival\, WQXR’s Hammered!\, the Contagious Sounds Series\, the Frequency Series\, Make Music New York\, the Outpost Concert Series\, the Vanguard Series\, the Red Note New Music Festival\, the Ball State New Music Festival\, the Music in the Shape of a Pear Festival\, and the Bowling Green State University New Music Festival. \nLarson is also a founding member of Bearthoven\, a piano\, bass\, and percussion trio dedicated to the frequent promotion and performance of brand new works. Since the group’s formation in 2013\, Bearthoven has commissioned over 15 pieces and is currently working on their first album\, which will be released on Cantaloupe Music in the Spring of 2017. \nKarl received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Contemporary Music and a Master of Music in Piano Performance at Bowling Green State University\, where he studied with Dr. Laura Melton. Larson completed his undergraduate degree at Luther College in Decorah Iowa as a pupil of Dr. John Strauss. He is on faculty at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. \n
